What is collage?
Collage is a piece of artwork that is created by different forms and pictures.
Research 2 of the above collage techniques on google. Which one appeals to you the most and why?
Cubomania appeals to me the most because I like things that are realistic. Even though the whole piece of the artwork is not entirely realistic, I appreciate artworks that look somehow realistic. I like the idea of changing shapes of photos and places them in different composition to create a new artwork.
Using the website: http://www.arthistoryarchive.com/arthistory/cubism/ or http://instruct.westvalley.edu/grisham/1d_analycub.html, http://instruct.westvalley.edu/grisham/1d_synthcub.html and answer the following questions:
What is cubism?
Give a general definition.Cubism is a surrealist movement by turning artwork into square or cubic form and shape, the objects are no long smooth and curved.
How did it start?
It started in 20th Century and was influenced by the I5th Century Italian Renaissance and the I6th Century Italian High Renaissance. It was the invention of Picasso and Braque, since they started to exclude all but the formal elements of art: line, shape, and color to create a new movement of art.
What is analytical cubism? Name a piece of analytical cubist artwork.
Analytical cubism is the first development phase of Cubism. The work is hard to read or understand, for exmaple, Ma Jolie by Pablo Picasso.
What is synthetic cubism? Name a piece of synthetic cubist artwork.
Synthetic cubism is the combination of Analytical Cubism and the experimental nature of Collage, such as The Bowl of Fruit by Pablo Picasso.
Using the website: http://www.artchive.com/ftp_site.htm compare the work of Braque, Picasso and Gris. How did Juan Gris' work differ from that of Braque's or Picasso's.
Juan Gris' work is more realistic and easier to tell what the artwork is. I know the object immediately when I first look at his work. He also liked to use dull colors, so it creates a warm feeling.
Do you like cubism? Why or why not explain using the vocabulary of the elements and principles of design.
I don't like cubism because the compostion is not totally balanced and the artists usually use only one color. There is not a lot of contrast and value. The lines are mostly straight and the shapes are mostly squares or rectangles. I like the artwork that consists of all different shapes, colors, and lines. There is no specific focal point, so the artwork does not catch my attention. There is storng rhythm, so the whole artwork is kind of repetitive and it makes me get bored. You are to create a cubist self portrait in photoshop using your photographs of yourself.
Do you think you will use analytical or synthetic cubism? Why or why not?
I will use synthetic cubism because I really like the idea of combination of two things, especially the collage idea. I do not appreciate cubism a lot, so I prefer something more realistic. Although synthetic cubism is still under the idea of cubism, it is more interesting and realistic.
